A million Scots enjoy the golden age of long-haul flights

Craig Brown, Scotsman Online 09/08/06

THE number of Scots jetting off to far flung hotspots reached record levels
last month, as airports announced long-haul passenger figures had broken
through the million mark.

Scotland's busiest airports saw passenger numbers hit a new summer high,
fuelled by the popularity of long-haul flights to Florida and Dubai, according
to operators.

Glasgow was Scotland's busiest airport in July, as passenger numbers exceeded a
million for the third year in a row, handling 1,036,550 passengers.

Edinburgh continued to close the gap, though, dealing with 862,428 passengers,
up 2 per cent on the same month last year. But Aberdeen reported the biggest
rise in numbers over the 12 months, an increase of more than 10 per cent.

Laurie Berryman, Scotland manager for the Emirates airline, said: "Our service
from Glasgow has been an overwhelming success thanks to the tremendous support
we have received from the Scottish community.

"Expensive and time-consuming connections through London or other airports are
a thing of the past for Scots flying long-haul. More and more business and
leisure travellers are recognising the benefit of Emirates services direct from
Scotland to Dubai and beyond.

Indeed - and that was why I added a paragraph or two and waited. I wasn't
disappointed!
