BMI is stopping its flights to the Western Isles because of a mix of
insufficient passenger numbers and rising fuel costs (Aberdeen Press &
Journal). The airline confirmed yesterday that its Edinburgh to Stornoway
service will be suspended from the end of July. Passengers already booked
onto flights after July 29 have the option of a refund or being transferred
to the new Loganair service. Fewer than 17,000 people a year are believed to
have been using the service, which is served by a 50-seat aircraft (BBC
Scotland Online). It was the only jet-engined aircraft on a route between
the two airports.
